2022 World Boomerang Championship – Day 3 (Rain Day) Update from Jason

Jason Smucker

Rain Day (between Day 2 and Day 3).

We threw two events today as part of the make-up/rain day: Team Trick Catch / Doubling and MTA (Maximum Time Aloft) Relay. Rachel and Christian again threw in both of the events.

Some highlights for Rachel include:

Rachel & Christian
  • A new personal record (PR) for Trick Catch /doubling of 7 points using a boomerang that Julie Appriou had given to Rachel the day before. Rachel’s previous best was 2 points using novice rules (a single point for a touch).
  • additionally, Rachel made her first trick catch
  • making three of her MTA catches during MTA relay.
  • and the US Youth Boomerang Team ran at least a one clean round of MTA relay where all four throwers

The RADline team (USA1) continued to roll today; starting off by winning the Trick Catch event. The big news here is that Daniel Bower threw a perfect round of 100 points and then continued on to earn an additional 60 points in the bonus round before he missed his first catch of the day. Kenny, Logan, Richard and Daniel combined for 388 points (averaging 97 points per thrower), then we suffered a little bit in MTA Relay with a 4th place finish.

We ended the the day taking 5 placing points. We still remain in the lead for first place, but it is the slimmest of margins. We lead Boomergang by a half a placing point. Our total point count now is 23 points.

Boomergang (International) and Burning Men (France 1) are second and third with 23.5 and 30 points respectively. BRrangs (Brazil) and Vintage Rad (USA2) continue to round out the top five at 35.5 points and 52.5 points.

We are done for the day. Team Day 2 has ended.

We will do Team Trick Catch / Doubling and MTA Relay tomorrow on the make-up/rain day.

We threw four events today: Accuracy, Endurance Relay, Australian Round, and 30-meter relay. Rachel and Christian again threw in all four events.

Some highlights for Rachel include:

– A new personal record (PR) for Accuracy of 38 points using a boomerang that Julie Appriou had just given to Rachel in the general warmup time. Rachel’s previous best was 18 points.

– making (at least) three catches in a row during Endurance relay.

– Threw three qualifying throws in Australian Round during terrible wind conditions for a total (I think) of 18 points.

– successfully threw a 30-meter boomerang in some pretty tough winds; the Wind Benders (US Youth team) beat the 5 minute time limit for 30-meter Relay, and even beat one of the other teams in the process!!!

The RADline team (USA1) continued to roll today; starting off by winning the Accuracy event. We then took second place in Endurace Relay with 45 catches against the Boomergang (International) team’s score of 47 catches. We suffered a little bit in Australian Round with a 5th place finish. But we ended up a strong by winning the 30-meter Relay event with a clean round (no drops) in pretty wild and shifty wind.

We ended up winning the the day with nine placing points and slightly extending our first place by a half a placing point. Our total point count now is 18 points.

Boomergang (International) and Burning Men (France 1) second and third with 22.5 and 24 points respectively. BRrangs (Brazil) and Vintage Rad (USA2) continue to round out the top five at 29.5 points and 38.5 points.

Day 2 Update

Hi everyone! We had another great day for day 2 of the team tournament. Everyone on all three teams are still doing awesomely through some very tricky wind and sporadic rain, we lost one event today because of rain delay that will be made up tomorrow.

Still in 1st place overall is Team RADline! They are really working hard and have increased their lead from yesterday to 6 placing points over the 2nd place French team!

Team Vintage RAD! Is still holding steady in 5th place. But still eyeing some opportunity to jump to the podium.

And the Youth Team is still doing very well in their first WBC appearance, still in 13th place, and still receiving so much wonderful support from all the veteran throwers which we are truly grateful for.

If you’ve got any good pictures from today of our throwers please post them here! Below please see a couple “candid” shots of our youngest youth throwers, Cam and Seth coming onto the field this morning. So much rad swagger!

Day 1 Update

Jason Smucker

We had a lot of rain today. But we had even more fun!!!

We had an on-field Welcome and Opening time. The teams greeted each other with a traditional mass high-five line. Check out the video highlighting the US Youth Boomerang Team leading a section of the line! And perhaps a new tradition: the presentation of the youngest thrower (Seth Lemay age 7) and the oldest thrower (Bill Hirsch age 69) to make the opening throws of the tournament.

We threw four events today: Endurance Relay, 30-meter relay, Australian Round, and Supercatch. Rachel (12) and Christian (18) threw in all four events. Cam (😎 and Seth (7) threw in the events that they could.

Caden (18) from Seattle and Julie (14) and Chloe () from France helped augment the US Youth Boomerang team to enable the team to throw in every event today when Cam And Set we’re not able to go. A huge shoutout to these new and helpful members of the team. They come to the table with a strong desire to help grow the sport, to encourage the US Kids, and to help in any way they can.

Some highlights for Rachel include:

– First World Cup catch in endurance relay (1st event).

– Four qualifying throws (greater than 30 meters) in 30-meter relay (no short-range calls).

– a new personal best in Aussie Round (I think her scores were 7,0,3,3,14= 27) [thrown in increasing rain with her best and let throw in a deluge.

– successfully navigating Supercatch. This is possibly the most complicated event in World Cup play. Navigating it and surviving it is a huge accomplishment.

The RADline team (USA1) got off to a slow start with a 5th place in Endurance Relay. But then we settled in and got rolling with a 1st place in 30-meter relay (my event for the day), 1st place in Aussie around, and 2nd place in Supercatch.

We ended the day in first place with 9 placing points. Boomergang (International) and Burning Men (France 1) second and third with 11 and 14 points respectively. BRrangs (Brazille) and Vintage Rad (USA2) round out the top five at 16 and 18 points.
